Pipe Drinking


Pipe drinking or "za jiu" in Chinese, is to draw wine from a container into a cup, bowl or directly to your mouth with a bamboo pipe, rattan pipe, reed pipe or other pipes. According to different pipes, pipe drinking is also called "bamboo pipe wine" and "rattan pipe wine" etc.

It is popular among the Yi, Bai, Miao, Lisu, Pumi, Wa, Hani, Naxi, Dai, Zhuang and Dong ethnic minority groups etc in areas like Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. This drinking custom, which has long been a hit with all nationalities in southwestern China, is an etiquette showing the ultimate respect to guests.
